Some four years ago, we learned of the Church of the Flying Spaghetti Monster and the open letter written regarding the FSM to the Kansas School Board. We aren’t particularly keen on bumper-stickers, but we did buy an FSM bumper sticker and put it on the car that I drive everyday to work. The sticker looks like this:

Clearly, you’d pretty much need to know about the FSM and his noodly appendages already to understand the bumper sticker at all.

At one point a few years ago on the way out to the summer home for the weekend, I perceived someone honking and waving at us in that car as they passed us. I didn’t notice anything wrong, and I didn’t recognize them, so the only (sketchy) reason I concluded was that they were signaling their appreciation of our appreciation of FSM and pirates.

I have otherwise never observed anyone else ask about, show awareness of, or even exhibit any interest in the bumper sticker.

Until today.

I found a note tucked under my windshield wipers, and at first I was concerned that someone had hit my car and left a note with their contact and insurance info. Instead, I got this:

The text reads:

I see you also have been touched by His Noodley Appendages… Praise FSM! – A fellow Buckaneer argh matey!

Yesterday, coming out of the pediatrician’s office I saw a bumper sticker on a van not unlike the kid mobile we drive around in that said “Twilight Mom.” With a certain degree of futility, I thought to myself, “I hope we never have a bumper sticker like that.” Who knows what will be all the rage in 8 years (5? 10?), presumably not vampires but they do have a certain cyclical staying power. I guess it could be worse : See, for instance, Disney princesses and fairies.

Perhaps if we get to the kids early enough we can get some LotR fascination going. It would have to be the books and not the movies, of course, cause I don’t want my car plastered with pictures of Orlando Bloom if I can help it.

While on my brief paternity leave, I have been doing a little cleaning up of boxes from the basement, stuff my parents brought to my house once we got settled a few years back. This includes a bunch of Fisher Price toys that I had when I was a kid, some single-purpose electronic games that have one one-billionth the power of a Nintendo DS but look like they might sell on EBay for above their original price, some trophies, t-shirts, and many other knick knacks.

I also came across a little stats card from one of my years in little league back in 1985. It says:

Yankees [ed. booo, I can't believe I played for a team called Yankees]
2nd Place [hopefully behind the Red Sox!]
1985

At Bat 43
Hits 18
Singles 9
Doubles 4
Triples 4
Home Runs 1
Walks 10
Strike Outs 9
Outs 13
Stolen Bases 12 [apparently I was quick]

AVERAGE 419

Not bad, eh? Of course, within a few years I was warming the pine and my coach had switched me from hitting right-handed to left-handed because I actually had better mechanics that way, even though I’m right handed. Yep, baseball was just not in my blood.

Reported Tuesday in the Telegraph, this might explain why when I whisper a request such as, “Go give mama a hug and a kiss,” into Siena’s right ear (which typically is what naturally happens just given the physics of how I grab her and kneel down next to her), she seems more likely to do it than when I just ask her from a distance. Or maybe she likes the conspiratorial aspect of it.

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/scienceandtechnology/science/sciencenews/5612036/Want-to-get-something-done–talk-to-people-in-their-right-ear.html

In any event, it’s fun to ask her really quietly to do things so Mama doesn’t know what she’s going to do. Last night this resulted in a game a telephone, in which I told Siena to, “Go tell Mama good night and you love her,” and in which Siena subsequently walked up to Mama and whispered in her ear, “Night night night night night.” It took several attempts to get it right. And I had to tell Siena outside of Mama’s line of sight, since she (Mama) can probably read lips. That’s one of those hoodoo things they teach you in the Linguistics department.

The fine folks over at mersenne.org are reporting that they might have found a new Mersenne Prime, the 45th. This would be the largest known explict prime (I think that means they know all the digits). There is a chance the number will have over 10 million digits. Reading one digit a second for 24 hours a day, that would require over 115 days to read. Verification is underway on two separate systems, they report, and that will take almost another two weeks. Two weeks to determine is a specific number is prime or not! Amazing.
