Thalia does love her dog. And despite being one-third her size, she does boss Barley around a lot. When Thalia goes to feed Barley dinner, she tells her, “Sit Barley! Sit! Sit Barley! Sit!” while pushing down on Barley’s back. Once Barley is sitting, Thalia grabs her by the cheek fur and makes Barley look her in the eye for a few seconds, and then Thalia says, “OK!” and Barley can then eat.
