We pencil almost all of our kid activities, and many of our own such as service appointments and the like, into our family calendar. Frankly it looks like a mess; packed to the gills with something to deal with every day. It’s this kind of thing that makes me worried that we are over-scheduling our children with activities. I don’t remember doing this much stuff when I was a kid.
Last week, I was unpacking some boxes in the basement after our recent move. One of these boxes (well, several of them in fact) contained a bunch of memorabilia and stuffed animals from my childhood. Among the old, dirty-brown Winnie-the-Pooh stuffed animal (sadly lacking his dapper red vest) and the old, also dirty Star Wars vehicles, was a family calendar from when I was around ten.
You know what? Almost every day had some activity penciled in my mom’s handwriting, and the days in that calendar look just as packed as they do today.
I guess I don’t need to worry.
